Overview:

Addressing persistent real-world challenges in today’s access networks, Tarana has combined many antennas and radios, a suite of unique algorithm innovations, and expert implementation to create the industry’s first truly viable and broadly scalable 5G alternative to fiber. Operating in tier-1 service provider networks all over the world, the company’s products feature fundamental advances in wireless performance, autonomous adaptation, and interference cancellation. These radical breakthroughs enable carrier-class operation at massive scale in free unlicensed spectrum, yielding dramatic improvements in the economics and deployment flexibility of fixed, mobile, and IoT access, plus a wide range of fiber extension applications. Tarana is funded by AT&T, Blum Capital, Deutsche Telekom, and four global private investors. The company, founded in 2009, is headquartered in Santa Clara, California (USA), with additional R&D centers in Berkeley, CA and Pune, India.

Product Overview:

Continued growth in bandwidth demand is exhausting copper-based fixed access networks everywhere. Efforts to increase supply with fiber have been stalled by prohibitively high costs and deployment delays. Wireless alternatives continue to fail in the face of the significant technical challenges in gigabit-speed fixed access — pervasive obstructions, spectrum scarcity, interference, changing conditions, and unworkable deployment complexity.

Tarana innovation has solved all these problems. Our Gigabit Broadband System (GBS) is powered by the results of nine years of focused R&D, and built from its custom silicon up with a completely fresh approach to wireless. Extensively validated by tier 1 operators, our fundamental advances in multi-radio performance completely transform the economics of delivering gigabit access.

The system comprises compact, self-contained base nodes (BNs) that are mounted on existing multitenant cell tower or rooftop assets, backhauled to the internet over fiber available at most tower locations. Depending on terrain, frequency, and tower height, each site can cover over 20 square km's of typical residential neighborhood construction.

The BNs communicate with residential nodes (RNs) installed on the outside of homes or MDUs, connected to the internal Wi-Fi networks via Power over Ethernet enabled Cat-5 cable. Tarana's adaptive radios automatically connect and authenticate with the best BN available, keeping installation simple and lowering subscriber acquisition costs. An enterprise remote node (ERN), with additional software and network interface features, is used in similar fashion for connectivity to small and medium enterprises.

Network planning, zero-touch provisioning, network monitoring, customer support automation, and many other functions are provided by Tarana's cloud suite.

USP:

Tarana's GBS features 5x the NLoS range of forthcoming 5G radios, with 10x their spectral efficiency and 50x their cell-edge performance. Tarana's interference-cancellation technology is 1,000x more effective than any alternative. We stand in a class all our own.

Management:

Omar Bakr — CEO and Co-Founder
Omar is leading the Tarana team and has driven the company’s core technology and business development. His prior experience includes design and deployment of WiLDNet, a low-cost, high performance wireless network, as part of UC Berkeley’s TIER Group. He has published 12 technical papers on multi-antenna beamforming, wireless spectrum reuse, and delay-tolerant networking. Omar holds a BS in Computer Science and Engineering and Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT, along with a PhD in Computer Science from UC Berkeley.

Sergiu Nedevschi — COO and Co-Founder
Sergiu’s unique vision has been guiding the company since day one, setting and executing on product, technology, and major account strategies. His prior experience includes network efficiency research at the International Computer Science Institute (yielding designs now incorporated into ECMA standards), wireless research at Intel Labs, and design and deployment of WiLDNet, a revolutionary low-cost, high performance wireless network, as part of UC Berkeley’s TIER Group. Sergiu has published more than 25 technical papers in wireless. He holds a BS in Computer Science from Universitatea Tehnica Cluj Napoca, Romania, along with an MS in Computer Science and PhD in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from UC Berkeley.

Dale Branlund — CTO and Co-Founder
Dale Branlund is our lead architect, applying more than 30 years of deep experience in wireless system innovation and development, executive management, and startup growth in advanced radio designs. He co founded and held senior technical executive roles in BRN Phoenix, BeamReach Networks (both 802.16-based networking startups powered by unique smart radio concepts), and Radix Technologies (in reconnaissance signal processing). He was also Chief Engineer at ArgoSystems, a defense electronics developer acquired by Boeing. Dale has several patents pending for mobile and fixed broadband systems using adaptive antenna technologies. He holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Cal Poly and an MS in Electrical Engineering from Santa Clara University.

Peter Osborne — Chief Financial Officer
Peter manages finance and accounting for us and brings to the team a wealth of experience in the CFO role. After 20-years as a partner in the audit business at Deloitte & Touche, he spent his past 16 years in CFO and other financial executive positions where he helped pilot Silicon Valley companies such as Hansen Medical, Mercury Interactive, MyoScience, SentreHEART, VNUS Medical Technologies, and WorldChain through rapid growth and successful exits. He holds B.Com and B.Sc degrees in accounting, statistics, and operations research from the University of Cape Town.

Steven Glapa — VP of Marketing
Steven leads our marketing, sales operations, and UI development. He has 20 years of experience in telecommunications innovation, with prior stints at Ruckus (where he led business and channel development that drove 10x revenue gains over 4 years and a $1b IPO), Zhone, ArrayComm, Lucent, and other startups in wireless, machine learning, and robotics. He holds an MBA from Columbia University, a BA in Physics from Carleton College, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science from George Washington University.

Andrew Hill — VP Operations
Andrew leads our operations team, including all aspects of manufacturing and distribution. He brings more than 20 years of executive experience in supply chain, manufacturing, test, and delivery logistics management. Prior to Tarana, he was COO of PlantSense, responsible for all day-to-day operations and global supply chain and distribution activities. He has served in executive and senior operations roles for other communications technology companies including Nokia, Harris Digital Telephone Systems, and Stanford Telecom. Andrew has a BS in Industrial Engineering from Cal Poly.

Harry May — VP RF Engineering
Harry leads our RF engineering team, practicing the rare art of analog multi-radio design with outstanding results. Prior to Tarana, he held RF engineering management roles at Exalt Communications, BRN Phoenix, Radix Technologies, Beamreach Networks, and Argo Systems. He holds BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from UC Davis.

Rabin Patra — Chief Software Architect and Co-Founder
Rabin is our chief software architect and leads the system integration team. He is applying more than 10 years of wireless network research and product development experience at Intel Research Labs and UC Berkeley, focused on 802.11-based low-cost, long distance wireless technologies, successfully validated through real-world deployments. Rabin has published more than 10 technical papers related to wireless networks and speech recognition. He holds a Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India, and a PhD in Computer Science from UC Berkeley.

Rakesh Tiwari — VP Product Management
Rakesh leads the definition and realization of our products, collaborating closely with our key customer accounts and with engineering throughout the product life cycle. He brings more than 16 years of experience in network infrastructure covering a wide range of products including wireless backhaul, core routers, advanced switching, and consumer devices. Prior to joining Tarana, he served as director of product management and engineering at Trango Systems where he led the development of their licensed microwave backhaul products. Rakesh has also held engineering leadership and software architect positions at IDT, Pluris and Jasmine Networks. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics from Bombay University and an MS in Computer Science, with an emphasis in networking, from the University of Southern California.

Yongmin Zhang — VP of Engineering
Yongmin leads our engineering team and oversees overall product development. He has worked in the field of wireless communications for more than 25 years and is an expert in microwave systems, network equipment, and signal processing technology. Before joining Tarana, he was senior director of engineering at Exalt Communications, leading wireless systems development, advanced signal processing, and system-on-chip designs. He also served as director of systems and director of hardware designs at Proxim Corporation, developing point-to-point and point-to-multipoint wireless systems. He was an engineering manager at Western Multiplex Corp., and a senior designer at California Microwave, Inc. Yongmin has a BS and a MS degree from Jiaotong University in Xian, China, and a Ph.D. degree from University of Houston, all in electrical engineering.
